Region Highlight: The Loire Valley

Located in the heart of France, the Loire Valley is known for its beautiful landscapes, medieval castles, and, of course, its exceptional wines. The valley's diverse terroir is influenced by its proximity to the Loire River, mix of soils, and cool climate. Loire is home to notable grapes Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, and Cabernet Franc, among other types.

If you want to step up your wine tourism, the Loire Valley is a fan favorite for it’s moderate climate and jaw-dropping architecture and picturesque towns. But the wine is the real star here.

This region which stretches along the Loire River is often mentioned as one of the wine pro’s favorites. It’s divided into four sections, which, from West to East are the Lower Loire, Middle Loire, Central Loire, and Upper Loire. The river imparts a variety of microclimates that encourage vine growth and help to give each of the region’s varieties their signature flavors and aromas.

In celebration of #nationalcabernetfrancday we are excited to highlight the beloved grape of not just Loire Valley but also The Finger Lakes. Cab Franc is king in Loire and is the red grape variety that thrives across the valley. It's versatility makes dinner and appetizer pairings easy, it's perfectly balanced with vibrant red berry with herb finish of green peppercorn flavors, and it's sensitivity creates delicious flavors expressive of its terroir.

One of the reasons why we love our local Finger Lakes is because of how well its terroir cultivates international varieties and flavors like that of the Loire Valley's Cabernet Franc. Although the Finger Lakes is known for its crisp white wines like Riesling, Cabernet Franc is its leading red varietal for a reason... Moderate tannins, expressive flavors, herbal and floral profiles make Finger Lakes Cab Francs a winner at every table and for any palate.

If you’re eager to try a local Cabernet Franc, we highly recommend grabbing a bottle of Nathan Kendall’s Cabernet Franc 2020.
